How to complete your legal marriage at the Register Office
The steps:
- First you must give notice of your marriage at your local Register Office (whether or not you wish to marry there). This costs £33.50 per person.
- The Superintendent Registrar then issues authority for the marriage and you are free to get married in any district by submitting your completed marriage notice forms to the Registrar of Marriages in that area.
- You can hold your legal marriage ceremony whenever you want before or after your wedding ceremony – on the day itself in the morning or a day or two before. There is no dress code so you can literally go in your jeans if you want!
- The marriage ceremony at the Register Office will take approximately 10-15 minutes.
- The Superintendent Registrar will make a short statement about marriage and you will be required to repeat a standard set of promises. These may not be changed and you do not need to exchange rings at this point.
- After the ceremony, the marriage register is signed by you both and your two witnesses.
A marriage at the Register Office will cost £40.00 plus £3.50 for the certificate. So including the notice it will cost you just over £100.
You can complete your legal marriage at any point before your wedding ceremony, this may be one or two days before or on the day of the wedding itself.
